When we think of energy-boosting, we tend to think of energy drinks or coffee, right? But how often do we think of getting or boosting energy using natural means? As busy professionals, our schedules can quickly become packed with deadlines, meetings, never-ending to-do lists, and life’s demands. In the midst of it all, it’s easy to find ourselves running on empty, with our energy levels plummeting when we need them most. You know when you feel like your body is failing you when you need it most, or even worse—you fall sick at the wrong time?
Let me tell you that it’s not your fault. At that very moment, in that state, your brain is wired to reach for the coffee or, even worse, for the “junk food.” I’ll expand on this some other time. But for now, while reaching for that second (or third) cup of coffee might seem like the easiest solution, there’s a more sustainable, long-term approach to boosting and maintaining energy: a holistic one.
Taking a holistic approach to managing your energy doesn’t just mean focusing on your diet. It recognizes the interconnectedness of your body, mind, and spirit. By addressing the root causes of fatigue - whether they be physical, mental, or emotional - you can cultivate lasting energy and resilience even during the busiest of seasons. This is because you would have built systems and habits that automatically kick in when you’re in that state. Imagine knowing exactly what to do when your energy starts dipping physically, emotionally, mentally, or even spiritually without the consequences of quick fixes. This system will kick in to help you get up.
Let’s explore a few key strategies you can start implementing.
1. Prioritize Quality Sleep
It’s no secret that sleep is crucial for restoring our energy levels. But did you know that more than one-third of adults aren’t getting the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night? [1] When we cut corners on rest, we pay for it with decreased focus, lower productivity, and poor decision-making (that’s why you decide to go for cookies over nuts when you’re tired). Sleep isn’t just about quantity; it’s about quality.
Tips to improve sleep:
Research shows that even small improvements in sleep quality can lead to a 10% increase in daytime energy levels [2].
2. Manage Stress Holistically
Stress is one of the biggest drains on energy, especially for busy professionals. When stress is high, your body produces excess cortisol—a hormone that, over time, can lead to fatigue, weight gain, difficulty concentrating, and even chronic illnesses. Stress impacts your mind, body, and spirit, so managing it holistically is key.
Effective stress-management strategies:
Studies have shown that people who engage in regular mindfulness practices report a 20% improvement in their energy levels and emotional well-being [3].
3. Nourish Your Body with Energizing Foods
What we eat plays a vital role in how we feel throughout the day. It’s easy to reach for sugary snacks or quick takeout meals when you’re short on time, but these choices often lead to energy crashes. Instead, opt for whole, nutrient-dense foods that stabilize blood sugar levels and sustain energy.
Energy-boosting foods:
Research suggests that eating a balanced diet that includes a mix of these foods can reduce feelings of fatigue by as much as 33% [4]. Learn more in this blog post.
4. Move Your Body Regularly
When your schedule is hectic, fitting in exercise might feel impossible. However, movement is one of the most effective ways to combat fatigue and increase your overall energy levels. Sounds counterintuitive, right? Well, exercise helps reduce stress hormones, improves sleep, and boosts your body’s production of feel-good chemicals like endorphins. It helps your body function optimally.
Easy ways to incorporate movement:
A study from the University of Georgia found that people who engage in regular physical activity experience a 65% increase in energy and reduced feelings of fatigue [5].
5. Cultivate Emotional Wellness
Your emotional health can have a significant impact on your energy. Negative emotions like frustration, overwhelm, or sadness can quickly drain your reserves. Holistic energy management includes nurturing your emotional well-being through self-care, connection, and intentional reflection.
Ways to boost emotional energy:
Research suggests that those who engage in gratitude practices report 23% lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and significantly higher energy levels [6].
Benefits of a Holistic Approach to Energy Management
Taking a holistic approach to energy management allows you to address the underlying factors that contribute to fatigue, rather than simply treating the symptoms. When you incorporate healthy habits for your mind, body, and spirit, you build resilience that helps you navigate busy seasons with greater ease.
Not only will your physical energy improve, but you’ll also experience:
Holistic energy management is sustainable because it’s not just about quick fixes, it’s about building habits that support your long-term well-being. The next time your schedule fills up, remember that taking care of yourself holistically will help you maintain your energy and thrive, no matter how busy life gets. You are meant and were made to live life to the fullest, but how will you do that if you’re cutting corners when it comes to your health?
